What scary movie made a big impression on me? It's not a horror movie. I never watched horror movies growing up. Even the commercials for the Freddy 1-900 number were too scary.

The movie that kept me up at night was Brazil. It's nihilistic ending, particularly the part where the agents come through the ceiling, was absolutely chilling to me. I stared up at my ceiling at nights because of it!

The Blair Witch Project made a lasting impression on me. I was pretty young when I first watched it, and I had never seen anything like it before (in terms of content and the way in which it was filmed). The end scene still spooks me out to this day! 😱

The word of mouth on Blair Witch was wild! The scariness of the movie came up in so many conversations, in a way that doesn’t really happen to me today. Sounds like you’d be in the “it was seriously scary” camp!

It really was wild! I remember it was all anyone would talk about for some time, at least in my area. Haha, I am without a doubt a member of that camp!

As a kid, Leprechaun and Candyman had big impressions on me. They were the first movies that made me scared to go to sleep. I go over those fears and started liking to watch horror movies, but as a younger adult Event Horizon was it for me. I found it disturbing and won’t watch it again.

I recorded so many Reels from the monster party.

With unlimited funds I’d have to plan for Halloween 2024 so I could be Rouge from X-Men, complete with a modest BBL and breast lift. I’d get a mad scientist to destroy the melanocytes in a strip of my scalp so I could have a permanent white bang, then dye the rest a warm auburn. Custom costume and boots, too.

Those are two formidable horror villains. I’d be scared, too! The only Leprechaun movie I’ve seen was recently. I thought Leprechaun in Space was completely bonkers and very cheesy! (My kind of horror movie.)

That’d be an amazing costume! Respect for all the permanent elements. I was a huge Rogue / Gambit fan growing up. Several years ago, I was part of an X-Men: TAS group costume, where we all wore their mall outfits from the first episode. I was Mall Wolverine and my partner was Mall Storm.

Hahaha! Mall outfits. Very nice.

It's comforting to know that I suck at hosting even imaginary parties. Oh well...

The scary movie that made the biggest impression on me is also not a horror movie. It was Deliverance. My adult self thinks I might actually appreciate it now, but i was so disturbed by it as a kid I can't bring myself to watch it again.

Haha, I'm sure you threw a memorable mash that'll be recalled by monsters for years to come.

Oh man, I completely relate. That's exactly how I feel about Brazil. I'd probably get more of the satire and have a deeper appreciation, but the kid in me is like, "Don't do it, bud."

Yes, I love the entire concept. Great job, pretty cool.

a case of La Croix made me lol very hard.

If you had infinite time and budget for a Halloween costume, who (or what) would you go as this year? I think I would go as one of my best friends in (full prosthetic to look exactly like him) who was going as me for halloween.

Haha, I love that costume idea. Sounds like something out of The Rehearsal on HBO!

The first horror movie to ever have an impact was Poltergeist. I was probably 9 or 10 the first time I saw it, and the scene where the guy peels his face off gave me the heebie-jeebies for a long time. When I was in college I worked at a video store, and their horror section was to die for... I lived, though, so I must not have watched the right ones.

Oh man, face-peeling scenes are very gross. Not a big Texas Chainsaw Massacre fan for that reason!

Was working in a video store the ideal job for a college student? In the 90s, it was sold to me as the best job ever by pop culture writ large.

Expand full comment

Indeed it was! We got to watch all new releases when they arrived so that we could give customers feedback, bring home any movie in the store for free, and discuss actors, movies and pop culture with the regulars. Everything was still VHS, and I even learned to splice a casette. When the movie Titanic was released on VHS it was a double cassette, and cost the store over $100 for each copy 😱 They never made their money back on rentals because everyone had already seen the movie multiple times in the theater. Good times!

Free movies must've been an incredible perk, especially at that time when – if you missed it in theatres and it wasn't showing on cable – the video store was your only hope.

Yeah, learning about the cost of tapes back then was a recent shock for me. I didn't realize stores had to pay so much for a VHS cassette, but it makes sense. It was a business-to-business sale. The studios figured they could charge a premium for it, since the store would make their money back many times on a hot rental. (Not Titanic though, lol.)

Ha, I knew the key to artistic success was felines. I'd like to thank the Aztec god Tezcatlipoca for my award.

For the actual adventure today, my first ending was exploiting my party guests for content and meme material. Now that I have some dead (and undead) man's triggers set up I can blackmail my way into ruling the monster community.

Right now I'm thinking of a very mundane costume, Jonathan Harker from Dracula, in honor of Dracula Daily. So basically just an English realtor, possibly with an 'I was held prisoner in Dracula's castle and all I got was this stupid T-shirt' T-shirt. Never been too into Halloween and dressing up honestly, cosplay is a bit tempting though.

Hail Tezcatipoca! Now more than ever!

Oooh, you've got a sub-game going. Well played! There's nothing spookier than embarrassing content living forever on the internet, not even the wolfman.

If you make the t-shirt on Zazzle or something, you could potentially sell that Halloween costume to other Dracula Daily readers. Sub-games!
