GREETINGS, ADVENTURER!
Today’s Quest: Deduce which of your ragtag space crew is a little ~too~ ragtag. Once you’ve got the culprit, join your fellow geniuses for a new kind of puzzle, plus a few resources for making your own games!
First time here? Adventure Snack is a game series I email to subscribers. Play quests for free, twice a month, and turn your inbox into an adventure!
THIS IS YOUR QUEST…
⏳ Estimated Playtime: 10 minutes
"Cap-tan! Op-an! Op-an! Mergency, cap-tan!" shouts Zum-Zum through your captain's door. The first decent night of sleep you've gotten in weeks, ruined by the ship's resident hairball. This better be good.
You hear a bang, bang, bang on your door, then a few button bleeps. Zum-Zum rushes in through the sliding door into your captain's chambers. The two foot tall critter bursts in, breathing heavily, her blue fur disheveled.
"Cap-tain!" panics Zum-Zum. "Sorry disturb. Xergon... d-d-dead!"
You can tell from Zum-Zum's manner this is no practical joke or spaceship goof-around. This is for real.
TAKE YOUR SEAT AT…
🧠 Fellow Smartie: You have been summed to this meeting of the Council of Geniuses to solve a most tricky of problem!
❓ Your spaceship crashes into an asteroid! There’s limited food and water for the 50 person crew and Intergalactic AAA may take weeks (or months) to reach you. How will you divide up the resources?
🇦 Utility – Give more resources to the crew members with useful skills, like engineering and survival.
🇧 Need – Give more resources to the crew members with medical issues or who are especially vulnerable.
🇨 Random – Give out resources to crew members strictly via chance and don’t prioritize anyone.
Offer your own reasoned solution, comment on another’s solve, or do both – with kindness and good humor, the marks of a rad adventurer.
MAKE YOUR FIRST VIDEO GAME!
🦸♀️ Last month, I hosted a Comic-Con panel with my game designer friend Spencer Yip (Fallen Legion) called Make Your First Video Game! In the panel, we taught a full house of aspiring designers and families dressed in coordinated Mario cosplay (aaaah, too cute!) how to make and publish games using Ink – the same engine I use for Adventure Snack.
Couldn’t go to Comic-Con because it’s too far away or you didn’t have your Harley Quinn Barbie costume dry cleaned in time? Here are the slides and an Ink template I made, so now you can make your own quests!

When you upload your first game to Ink, be sure to email me: adventuresnack@substack.com. I wanna play it! Plus: I may feature your game in an upcoming Adventure Snack newsletter…
My husband and I did it! He managed to remember the time of death, and I contributed the cutest Zum-Zum voice, I could muster, and together, we triumphed!
Very nice. A good mystery with just enough of a twist to make it interesting.
I choose B. My gut said A until I remembered Animal Farm and the consequences of treating people “more equal.” Though the scholar in me very much wants to pick C to study the social effects of random distribution.
